While the structure of the episodes remained generally the same as the early years, during this time the show's characters and format were developed significantly. Zippy became increasingly loud and boastful, his mischief a regular source of humour, while George became slightly more extroverted and was no longer afraid to speak, though his shyness remained a predominant character trait. Bungle also became increasingly 'goody-two-shoes' and showed a sneaky side, which put him frequently at odds with Zippy. Rather than just remaining outside the window, Zippy and George were shown within the Rainbow House itself more often, behind a table, while the singers would more frequently join the characters in the Rainbow House scenes rather than being confined to the song segment.

The format of the show was significantly built upon during this era. The scripts began to move beyond the educational format of the show and focus more on actual storylines, driven by character comedy rather than educational themes. The puppets were portrayed more like actual children, albeit exaggerated for comedy effect, with Zippy the loud and mischievous one, Bungle the tell-tale conformist, and George the shy, timid character caught between them. Geoffrey's character moved beyond the simple role of presenter to be more of a realistic parent figure, often becoming exasperated and harried by the antics of the three puppets, occasionally showing a grumpy side or losing his temper. As the show moved increasingly into sitcom territory, Rod, Jane & Freddy's roles increased vastly, involved more heavily in the storylines instead of just singing the song. More of the Rainbow House was shown instead of just the living room, with the bedrooms, kitchen, garden and occasionally additional rooms shown frequently. As the show increased in popularity, more celebrity guests began to feature, usually to read a story from the Rainbow book or help with the song. Another common theme for episodes around this time involved the cast acting out a well-known fairytale, such as Rumplestiltskin, The Ugly Duckling, or The Hare and the Tortoise. Various guest characters were introduced who would make the occasional recurring appearances, most notably 'Aunty' played by Patsy Rowlands, and Zippy's cousin Zippo (voiced by Roy Skelton and usually operated by Valerie Heberden).
At this time, more of the episodes were written by the cast members themselves, with Roy Skelton, Stanley Bates, Geoffrey Hayes and Freddy Marks all contributing a significant number of episodes to the show. A special 1,000th episode was screened in October 1986 around the time the show celebrated its 14th birthday, featuring a whole load of child viewers of the show joining the cast for a party, with Matthew Corbett and Sooty appearing as guest characters, alongside Christopher Lillicrap.
Not back then but the Victors did have some early recordings. I started off in an Instrumental band called The Uniques and then was in a band called The Continentals for a short period of time before I formed The Escapades in 1965, which was a British influenced group doing Beatles, Stones, The Searchers etc. Our first gig, we opened for Chuck Beery here in Minneapolis. From there I joined The Accents which was more a blues and R&B group before finally moving to California to do studio work. When I came back to Minneapolis in 1967, I joined The Litter. In late 1968 after The Litter completed filming our performance in the movie Medium Cool, I left the group to follow my passion at the time which was to form a 3 piece power trio. We called it White Lightning and later shortened the name to just Lightning when we released our first album.
The Litter was already a playing band when I joined. The original Guitar player Bill Strandlof was actually a friend of mine but he wanted to get into a group with more harmonies. Something on the order of The Hollies so he quit the Litter in 1967. Just around the time I came back from LA. The story I heard was Jim Kane, the bass player wanted to call the group The Litter after seeing a bunch of puppies nursing on their mother, but the name became associated with garbage fairly quick because of the raw music we played and I guess we never set the record straight on that so when the time came to name the 2nd album I came up with $100 Fine and the connection to litter and garbage was there for good.
Tons of local groups, most of them making local records that would make the charts here in town. Lots of gigs back then but The Litter broke out of that scene after we did a couple of club gigs in Chicago. We were so well received there that we eventually wound up playing there more than in Minneapolis and for a while people thought the group was from Chicago. Played a lot big shows there at the Electric Theatre and the Aragon ballroom with everyone from The Animals and The Byrds to Jethro Tull and many more.
Ten members of Spiral Tribe were arrested and charged with "conspiracy to cause a public nuisance," which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. At Wired's press time, the UKpounds 4 million showcase trial was due to end, and Parliament was pushing through the Criminal Justice Bill, which, if passed, will make squatting illegal and allow police to disperse any crowd of ten or more people who look ready to "do something." (The bill will give squatters 24 hours notice to get out or be prosecuted; this, incidentally, breaches the European Convention of Human Rights and Freedoms, according to Liberty, Britain's civil rights campaign group.)
Zippiedom has become a deliberately broad church: It embraces the multinational businessman taking yoga classes as well as the hippie couple making candles to sell at festivals, the New Age traveller with a PC running off his bus's dynamo and the raver looking for a more meaningful buzz than ecstasy. "We need the maximum number of people to change in the shortest possible time. The best way is to make the alternative fashionable," says Clark. "There are no 'wrong reasons' for becoming a zippie."
The pagan roots revival that the travellers brought to the zippie movement is fundamentally at odds with the government's insistence on Judeo-Christian pub culture and 11 p.m. bedtimes, no matter how hard the police crack down. Interest in the New Age is more than passive; it's rooted in a darker, indigenous Celtic/Nordic shamanism revival that has become increasingly politicized.
It was serendipity that drew me to the tale. I stumbled upon a newspaper article about the horse and knew right away that this story would resonate with young readers, just as it resonated with me. And after visiting the retired racehorse at his home in upstate New York, I was never more certain. Youngsters will identify with Zippy Chippy. He may have lost every single one of the 100 races he ran (Zippy won zip), but in the process, he became a folk hero, just like his champion ancestors. Zippy teaches us that just being in the game is enough. And he reminds us that sometimes we need to stop and smell the roses.
The action is more inventive as it involves compelling obstacles that Sonic has to face which relies on more than just his super-speed to solve the problems i.e. a set-piece involving an avalanche and saving a potential casualty. The film also thankfully relies less on the slow-motion style that had reached its peak in repetition in the first film. In addition, the performances from the cast are more confident and assured this time around; even with the variable screen-time from all involved.
